On-site Tests with AC Voltage on HV-XLPE Cable Systems
We conduct HV tests on HV polymeric cable systems to ensure that installation of cable systems (cables and accessories) is correctly done. The main purpose of conducting high voltage tests on the main insulation is to check the quality of how the cables are laid and the accessories installed. In doing so, we pay special attention to the interface between the different parts of the system. This test is carried out to prevent unexpected outages and the resulting high costs.
On-site testing with AC voltage on HV-XLPE cable system is performed specifically to prove that the assembly of cable accessories onto the cable was done in accordance with the requirements. The test verifies that the cable system is ready for operation. High Voltage AC (or near) power frequency tests are considered to be very selective and are therefore recommended. For system rated voltage (U) of 132 kV, AC voltage testing at 2 Uo gives reliable results. It is considered the most effective commissioning test available in the industry and performance of the test does not decrease the lifetime of the system being tested.
Once HV polymeric cables have been laid, Riyadh Cables offers tests on the system using a transportable setup based on the series resonance principles. The setup is capable of testing HV cable systems with rated voltage of 380 kV for a circuit length of up to 5km, GIS and O/D Substation systems.
As the test systems are based on series resonance principle, the frequency of the voltage depends on capacitance of the cable circuit and thus on the length. The system frequency range is from 30Hz to 300Hz, which is approved worldwide.
The test setup can be extended with special equipment for diagnostic measurements on terminations (HF-PD measurements) or on cable systems (PD measurement mapping method).
The test set consists of a frequency converter, an exciter transformer connected in series with a reactor with an inductance of 17H, and a voltage divider (see diagram).
